Department of Religion

The McKnight Doctoral Fellowship program provides financial support, mentorship, and professional development to Doctoral students of Color who attend one of nine participating institutions.  LaToya Leary will use the fellowship to investigate constructions of social identity in early Jewish texts.

Carson Bay’s dissertation project on “Pseudo-Hegesippus, the Jews, and the Jewish Temple,” was awarded the Josephine de Karman Fellowship for the 2017-18 academic year. The Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust honors the sister of the first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, Theodore von Karman, by supporting the most promising dissertation research being carried out within the United States by students in the arts and sciences.

American Religious History doctoral candidate Daniel Roeber is a Three-Minute Thesis Doctoral Competition finalist. The annual event challenges graduate students to describe their research projects in just 3 minutes. 

The Three-Minute Thesis Doctoral Competition Finals will be held on Wednesday, November 29, at 6:00 PM in the Durell Peaden Auditorium, College of Medicine. The audience will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award at the close of the finalists’ presentations

The fellowship supports scholars in the humanities and related social sciences who are pursuing research on religion in an international context and desire to connect their projects with journalists and media specialists. Corrigan’s project is entitled, “Religious Violence and American Foreign Policy”.

The Religion Department congratulates Jimmy Yu, Associate Professor in Chinese Buddhism, for receiving the Center for Chinese Studies Grant from the National Central Library of Taiwan for the summer of 2016. The Department also congratulates Michael McVicar, Assistant Professor of American Religious History, for receiving the 2016 Risley Family Fellowship by the College of Arts and Sciences at FSU.
