Religion Department Welcomes Two New Faculty

The Religion Department is pleased to announce that in Fall 2019 we will be joined by new Assistant Professors Sonia Hazard and Laura McTighe, both of whom will teach in the area of American Religious History. Professor Hazard (Ph.D. Duke) currently is a NEH Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. Professor McTighe (Ph.D. Columbia) currently is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Dartmouth College.

Their hire brings to a total of five the number of full time faculty in American Religious History, making it the largest cluster of graduate teaching faculty in that area in the nation. Their hires add historical breadth and depth to the ARH faculty, enlarge the departmental expertise in method and approach in the study of religion, and build upon other departments’ areas of expertise both within and beyond the College of Arts and Sciences. They will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, guide student research, and cultivate linkages with communities beyond the gates of the university. Their hire follows an international search begun by the department in summer 2018.
