A. Description of the Law and Religion Concentration
The Law and Religion concentration allows students pursuing a religion major to focus their studies on the intersections of religion, law, politics, and ethics. Students who choose this concentration will complete the ordinary religion major curriculum but will tailor their electives toward these interests.
B. Curriculum for the Law and Religion Concentration
To complete the Law and Religion concentration, students must take 30 total hours.
Required Courses:
- REL 4044 What Is Religion? What Is Religious Studies? (3 hours)
- REL 4190 Undergraduate Seminar in Religion (3 hours)
- REL 3178 Religion and Law (3 hours)
- At least 3 credit hours in each of the three areas: Western, Asian or African, and Issues and Approaches (9 hours total)
- At least 6 credit hours from this list (6 hours total):
- REL 3171 Religion and Democracy
- REL 3484 New Religious Movements
- REL 3493 Religion, Prisons, and Abolition
- REL 3494 Religion and Global Human Rights
- REL 3498 Foundations of Human Rights
- REL 3936 Gender, Law, and Religion
- REL 3936 Race, Law, and Religion
- Two REL 3000-/4000-level electives (6 hours total)
Students must complete at least 18 credit hours at the 3000/4000 level. Courses in which the student receives a grade below C- will not count toward the major.
